I look after other people's servers during the day, so at home I keep the smallest arrangement that still holds my photographs.

Why so little

Every extra service is another thing to patch, another log to read and another way to lose a file quietly. Four drives, two machines and a text file of commands have survived longer than any of the tidier setups I built before them.

Rules I stick to

Two copies on the shelf, one in someone else's attic. Restore something real every month. Never trust a status page that has no second opinion. If a fix cannot be written down in five lines, it will not be remembered in five months.
